A New District 16

While the City Council is the law-making body of the City of New York, in our mayor-council government, the City Council position offers the representatives unique opportunities, including access to the media, that can be used to the benefit of our respective districts.

As an example, I plan on implementing a Business Giveback Project, where businesses pledge to donate at least $500 per year to support an education project in the district. I will use the media regularly to promote the Business Giveback Project and to promote the businesses that support the project.

The City Council is to the City of New York as Congress is to our great nation. To that point, we have all seen the bureaucracy that is involved in enacting laws that benefit the people. While I intend to vigorously pursue laws and other measures that favor District 16, we know that our children cannot wait while lawmakers push and pull to get things done. This is why my ideas to self-fund projects with my District 16 not-for-profit corporation, is one substantial difference that sets me apart from the other candidates.

The District 16 Funding Corporation will engage in various fundraising and business ventures, and 100% of the profits will go toward funding our projects. My team is already fine-tuning our many projects, so that we can hit the ground running from my first day in office.

Group Tutoring Centers

Mr. Bello pledges to open Group Tutoring Centers for K – 12 throughout District 16 in the Bronx. Tutoring can help children succeed in school and provide them with increased confidence and self-esteem. In a Group Tutoring session, one tutor helps a small group of similarly situated students. This minimizes cost without compromising results. The key word here is, “group.” As you know, only a handful of families can afford to pay a tutor; however, if the hourly rate for that tutor is shared by a group of 8 -10 students, the rate becomes affordable.

Classes will include:

1. Math
2. Reading
3. Writing
4. Study Skills
5. College Preparation

Funding for the centers can come from our own ground-breaking funding sources and/or state or federal government money, and the sessions can be held at local community centers, government buildings, or public libraries.

Life Skills Learning Centers

In addition to Group Tutoring Centers for K – 12, Mr. Bello pledges to open Life Skills Learning Centers throughout District 16 in the Bronx.  Life Skills Learning Centers will teach adults, both young and old, the skills to achieve and maintain a high standard of living.

It is no secret that maintaining and strengthening the family unit is a prerequisite to ensuring that our students succeed. Our Life Skills Learning Centers will help to ensure that all of our children go home to a nurturing environment – one that is conducive to learning and positive growth.

In short, Life Skills Learning Centers will help parents to build their relationships, or in the case of single-parent homes, provide readily accessible resources to help single parents succeed.

Lessons will include:

  1. Conflict Resolution
  2. Resume Writing
  3. Job Interview Preparation
  4. Money Management
  5. Budgeting
  6. Parenting 101
  7. Law 101
  8. How to Start a Small Business/Ideas for a Small Business

Funding for the centers can come from our own ground-breaking funding sources and/or state or federal government money, and the sessions can be held at local community centers, government buildings, and public libraries.
